5 Implications of a God Who Never Lies

This is a follow up post to "The God who Never Lies." I want to share with you 5 implications of a God who never lies.

1) We can Trust His Word to be True

If we believe in and worship a God who never lies, it means we can believe everything that He says in His Word is true. We don't have to question what He says, or feel like He is holding out on us. We can believe that His commands are trustworthy and are good for us. We can believe that the Word is God's spoken word to us, and it is for our benefit: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) It is our trust in God's character and His Word that enables us to believe in the hope of eternal life and motivates us to pursue a life of godliness along with the good works that he has prepared for us to do. Know this: to question or doubt God's Word, is to accuse God of being a liar.

2) All Other gods are Liars

I think Paul deliberately uses this phrasing in Titus 1 to not only contrast God against the false teachers that were present in the church on the island of Crete, but to also contrast God against all the other gods of the day. In saying that God is not a liar, Paul is proclaiming that God is the source of truth while all the other gods are liars because they are built on lies. Their ultimate source of the lies is the god of all lies, Satan. Scripture boldly calls these false gods dead idols. It is only when we come to believe and worship the God who never lies that we are able to see all other gods in this light. I believe this is why the Psalmist in Psalm 135: 14-17 was able to pen these words: "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them." As Christians, we worship the God who never lies, and we have the opportunity to share His Gospel to other people so that they may turn from their gods, their own idols and false gods, toward the God who never lies.

3) All Other Religions are Built on a Lie

The world we live in tells us to find a spirituality or religion that is best suited for us because all religions lead to Heaven. We know this logic doesn't work in other areas of our lives. 2+3 doesn't equal 6 , and you can't drive towards Nova Scotia expecting to make it to Ontario. As Christians, we believe there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6). If our faith is rooted in the God who never lies it means all other religions are built on lies. Even the religions that claim to worship the same God as the Christian God because they worship a variation or a counterfeit version of the Living and truth telling God of the Bible. We have the opportunity to lovingly engage these people and point them to the God who never lies and gives the hope of eternal life to whoever believes in Him.

4) We are all Liars

This may sound harsh, if God is the source of all truth and never lies, it means you and I are liars. To say we don't lie or have never sinned is an act of lying (1 John 1). We don't sometime tell lies, we are liars in our very nature. Why? Though we were created in the image of the God who never lies and were meant to worship Him and reflect him, we chose to submit ourselves to the god of this world who tells lies (Satan) and became liars ourselves. However, the good news is that when God redeems us through Jesus Christ he has set us free from our sinful nature and is actively at work in us through the Holy Spirit, putting the sinful nature to death in us, while at the same time molding and shaping us to reflect Him. This enables us to be men and women of integrity because our God is a God who never lies.

5) God Keeps His Promises

We may find this hard to believe because we have broken promises we have made to others, and people we love have broken promises to us. As a father of three, I can sadly admit I have broken promises I have made to my children: "I will play with you later, just let me finish what I am working on." Later came, and I didn't play with them. However, the same can't be said about God. It is because our God never lies that He always keeps His promises. Just because we have had bad experiences in our human relationships with promises; we cannot project our experience on God or limit his character. We tell lies, God doesn't; we break promises, God doesn't. This is such incredible news for us. When God makes a promise it is as good as done. This doesn't mean it happens immediately or that we don't have to wait for God to fulfill His promise, because sometimes we do.

God made a promise in Genesis that he would send a rescuer who would crush the head of Satan and deal with sin. Abraham was promised a son through the whole world would be blessed, and years later Sarah and him had Issac. Ultimately those promises were fulfilled when Jesus was born into the world. Israel was promised that the Saviour would come from the line of Judah. Israel waited thousands of years for their Saviour. The Good news was that Jesus wasn't just the saviour for Israel, but of all the world, which also fulfilled God's promise to Abraham. Though there was waiting involved, God fulfilled his promise. This should give us hope that he will fulfill the promises that he has made in Scripture towards us.

One of the promises He made for believers was the promise of eternal life. In Titus, Paul tells us the hope of the believers is eternal life, and this life was promised before the foundation of the world. Eternal life is about more than going to Heaven when we die. It is about life with God and receiving all the benefits that have been given to us in salvation. It is a life that begins and is experienced the moment we are saved. God is actively fulfilling his promise of eternal life by sanctifying us and producing new life in us. God promises to finish what he started in us (Philippians 2). He will continue to work in us and sustain us until He calls us home or when Jesus comes back so that we may fully experience the eternal life that he promised us.

Dear Christian, you and I worship the God who never lies. Allow that truth to sink deep into your heart. Cling to it; praise God for it. May that truth motivate you to submit more of your life to him, to let go of the past, to forgive others and seek forgiveness, to confess and turn from your sins, to pray to Him, to read his word, to pursue the life of godliness that he has given you in Jesus Christ, and most importantly, tell others about the God who never lies, so that they may believe in Him too.
